UPDATE FEBRUARY 2015

++++++++++++++++++++++++

IN REPLY to my UPDATE sent last month, our classmate Steve Rhodes sent a note to suggest a periodic list be sent so that people can be kept informed about who will be attending the June 2015 reunion event. I conveyed Steve’s suggestion to Gillie Walker, who communicated the idea to the Class of 1965 Committee. Favorable to the idea, their committee recently decided to post the list of registrants on their Facebook page. People who want to see the list will have to be a Facebook member. Because I am not a Facebook member, one of my students (all of whom are Facebook members) accessed the public portion of the Class of 1965 Facebook page and printed out the list for me.

Enclosed below is the list of people who have registered so far. Their list does not specify the graduation year of the registrants, who are all combined in alphabetical order by last name. My quick review shows the registration list includes WHS 1966 classmates Doug Allen, Bob Cook, Steve Cox, Richard Helwig, Glen Kruse, Roy Manuszak, Maryellen Brada Manuszak, Ron Petty, Gillie Walker and Linda Nolin Weber. In addition to those 1966 classmates, our classmates Barbara Garrison, Shirley Guinta Tafoya and Patti Kueck Daniel have indicated that they plan to attend the June 2015 event. Barbara did not mention if her brother Jerry Garrison (Class of 1965) plans to attend. Our classmate Joe Good’s brother, Frank and his wife Susie Shattuck Good (both in the Class of 1967), already have registered for the event. Our classmate Eldon Lee’s sister, Judy and her husband John Henke (both in the Class of 1965), already have registered for the event. Our classmate Mimi George Torreano (known to us by Marie when we were at WHS) sent me a note to say that she is seriously thinking about attending the June 2015 event, and she said that her brother Ray George (Class of 1965) also is thinking about attending the event.

The pre-registration total of 82 is quite good for being four months away from the June 2015 event. That total is about the same as it was at this time of year for the reunion sponsored by the Class of 1966 four years ago in 2011. Registration that year rose to 100 by April 2011, rose again to 130 by May 2011, climbed to 173 by June 2011, and went up to almost 200 by July 1 in 2011. The same increase pattern undoubtedly will occur this year in the months leading up to the June 2015 event.

In reply to the question posed by Steve Rhodes and a few other classmates, no decision has been made about a 2016 reunion. It may not be until around October 2015 before a decision is made. Our classmate Bruce McAlexander remains committed to having some type of 2016 reunion even if it is on a smaller scale than what the reunions have been in the past.

THE 50-YEAR ANNIVERSARY of the CLASS of 1965 will be held on Friday and Saturday, June 19-20, with a dinner/dance on Friday night at the event center near Widefield and a picnic on Saturday in the park in Fountain. The event is open to ALL classes of the 1960s. Soft drinks will be provided on both days with a cash bar being available at the event center. Only cans of 3.2 beer will be allowed at the picnic. While there will be tables at the picnic, local people are urged to bring lawn chairs and blankets for attendees coming from out of town.

The registration fee is $50 per person for the two-day event. Online payments can be made on the Paypal website, at which the “Send” option should be clicked on the home page and then typewidefield65reunion@yahoo.com in the box titled “their email.” Be sure to click the “Friends or Family” tab so there will be no charges to reunion organizers. ATTACHED in JPEG FORMAT is a photo of me with my longtime friend Renee (Class of 1965) in the late 1960s in Colorado Springs. Given that both of us are shown in the photo with shoulder-length dark hair and you are not sure who is who, I am the one on the left. By the time 1970 rolled around, my long dark hair evolved to a fuller Afro-type style that was captured in a photo of me with my older brother Luiz. Those flamboyant styles certainly are a stark contrast to the more conservative “old man” look consisting of very short and solid white hair in my older years nowadays.

This update was prepared by me.

Respectfully submitted,

Donnie Martinez

Known at WHS by stepfather’s surname Collier

Martinez is my birth certificate and legal surname

a/k/a Butch, family nickname since childhood

a/k/a Don, presumably the adult version of Donnie

a/k/a Primo (Cousin) to dozens of my Martinez cousins

a/k/a El Aguila (The Eagle), a version of Gillie’s name for me

a/k/a Nitpicker Supreme, a title lovingly given to me by Gillie

a/k/a Frank to older women saying I look like their idol Frank Sinatra

a/k/a Dee Dee, a fun name used by people to mean Dear Donnie

I don’t care what people call me, just call me.
